Lesson Five

In this lesson we will examine the tabernacle/temple of Old Testament Israel and the Christian temple. The tabernacle was a tent temple designed to be moved from site to site. The Old Testament temple was a permanent structure.

The tabernacle: Exodus 25-27

Furnishings:

  1. Describe the ark (25:10-16). How was it carried?

  2. Describe the mercyseat (25:17-22). What did God do at the mercyseat?

  3. Describe the table for "the bread of Presence (25:23-30). How was it carried?

  4. Describe the lamp stand (25:31-40). How did they know what it was to look like?

The structure:

  1. What were the walls made of (26:1-6)?

  2. What covered the tabernacle (26:7-14)?

  3. What held the tabernacle up (26:15-29)?

  4. How did they know what the tabernacle was to look like (26:30)?

  5. What divided the tabernacle into two sections (26:31-35)?

The altar: 27:1-8

  1. Describe the altar.

  2. How did they know what the altar was to look like?

The court yard: 27:9-19

  1. Where was it located?

  2. Out of what was it made?

The temple: 2 Samuel 6

  1. What were the dimensions (verse 2)?

  2. Out of what was it built (verse 7)?

  3. What was unusual about the construction process (verse 7)?

The Christian temple: 1 Peter 2:1-10

  1. Who is the living stone that is the corner stone of the Christian temple (verses 4,6,7,8)?

  2. Who are the living stones used to construct this temple (verse 5)?

  3. Who are the priests who serve in this temple (verse 5)?

  4. What do these priests do in this temple (verse 5)?

  5. List the roles in which Christians serve (verse 9).

  6. What is our primary responsibility (verse 9)?

  7. What was not true of us but is now true of us (verse 10)?

1 Corinthians 3:16,17

  1. What is the temple of God?

  2. Who lives in us?

  3. Why must we not destroy the temple of God?

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

  1. What is the temple of the Holy Spirit?

  2. Who gave us the Holy Spirit?

  3. Why are our bodies to be used to glorify God?

Which temple is a non-living structure? Which is composed of people? Which temple had a detailed blue print given by God?
