Observations:

  1. This was a moment of tremendous sadness and joy.

    1. Jesus made it evident that there was finality in this meeting, and the meeting would be followed by betrayal.

    2. Jesus said that he would have this special fellowship with them again in the kingdom.

  2. He established a moment of significant fellowship that would produce a sustaining bond between them.

    1. Though this fellowship that took its significance, meaning, and strength from his act of unselfish sacrifice for them, they would mutually sustain each other in their mutual loyalty to Jesus.

    2. They would be sustained in a mutual fellowship that focused on him until they were with him at the great kingdom banquet, the Jewish concept of union with God after death.

  3. The reality of the kingdom of God has critical significance in the Lord's Supper.

For further reflection:

Read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
