Lesson Seven

Concern For Others

Text: Matthew 8:5-13

Before attending the class, read the text and think about/answer the questions.

  1. Explain why it was unusual for a Roman centurion (a Roman officer over 100 men) to be concerned about a slave he owned.

  2. What was wrong with the centurion's slave?

  3. What did Jesus offer to do?

  4. Consider the centurion's response and answer these questions:

    1. What was the centurion's attitude toward Jesus?

    2. What did the centurion mean when he said, "I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me"?

    3. What did the centurion want Jesus to do?

  5. Was Jesus amazed? Why?

  6. Comment on Jesus' statement: "I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel."

  7. What did Jesus say about "sons of the kingdom" and the many who come from the east and the west? What does that mean?

  8. What did Jesus say to the centurion? What happened?

  9. Personal thought/reflection question: how can I deepen my willingness and desire to trust God this year?
