IN THE STORMS OF LIFE

Senior Graduation Services
Class of 2000

What can you say to a group of people you've spent the last 6 years with? We've been camping, hunting, and fishing together. We have been on retreats and trips all over this southern half of the U. S. together. And now I watch another important stage in your growing and maturing process.

What can I possibly say? Every year I try my best to address each senior class in a personal way. Each class is different form the one before it and the class of 2000 is no exception to that rule. Different may sum you guys up the best. You are unlike any class before. You come from 6 different schools. You have different hobbies, different interests, and different friendship circles. You have always gone your different directions. So how can I possibly sum everything up and meet all of your different needs at the same time?

Easy. You all have at least one thing in common: Storms. Storms? Brad, what are you talking about. Here we go again! I think they took out more than the tumor! How many times have I heard that one??? That's right, storms. Look around you. So many different storms are represented by this group.

This group of young people have really been through a lot. They've been through as much or more than any group I can ever remember. So many storms are represented here. There have been physical storms, emotional storms, and spiritual storms. And I've been right there with many of you through all of these storms. Some of these storms are obvious. Many of our church family have seen these storms and have walked along side you all the way. Many of them are private. Everyone in this room has battled through storms on their own. And many are trying to do so at this moment.

The storms we encounter in life are often what makes us or what breaks us. And if I could leave anything with you this morning that I felt would truly help you along the many different paths you're about to travel, it would be a better understanding of how to face these storms. For my friends, your storms are just beginning!

Let's look at a couple of examples of the storms the disciples faced. Turn to Matthew 14:22-32; Mark 4:35-41.

  1. When your storms come, keep your eyes focused on Jesus. Don't focus on the storm! When you do, you loose sight of the only one that can help.

  2. He will always make your storm work for your good.

  3. Trust His perception. You don't know what's on the other side of the storm.

  4. Storms stop at His presence. He can turn your raging winds into a sea of glass.

  5. NO STORM IS FATAL! For we are not bound by this body. Philippians 3:7-8; Romans 8:18-30.
